“Mirrors (ACAPELLA Cover)” by Kevin Lien
Everything you hear in this track was recorded using only my mouth, hands & feet.
I’ve always been a sucker for acapella and being able to really hear those subtle 7ths & little inversions. It’s been years since I’ve recorded a full-blown acapella track for you guys, and this song immediately came to mind as soon as I started brainstorming. The beginning is an original TTBB arrangement I made, since I don’t really like the way the original song starts off. Timbaland really goes to town with the beatboxing and the clicking & tongue work, so I tried my best to replicate that.
At the end of it all, ended up with a 15-part acapella arrangement of a great song. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Imagine Reading by the Light of a Plant …
That’s just what Antony Evans and the team behind the Glowing Plant Kickstarter have in mind. And you can help them get there (and get your own glowing plant in return!)
Molecular biologists have used bioluminescence as a laboratory technique for decades. This light-producing reaction (different from the fluorescence given off by jellyfish and other “glowing” organisms like the GFP-labeled tobacco plant above) is stunningly simple, using proteins isolated from fireflies and glow-worms to create light using only oxygen and a molecule called luciferin. I’ve done it myself dozens of times, it’s pretty cool.
Modern synthetic biology techniques give us the power to insert this gene into the genome of almost any organism whose genes we can manipulate. Arabidopsis thaliana, the so-called plant “model organism” is one of those. Using special plant-specific bacteria, we can insert genes into the tiny weed at will. Since every living thing expresses RNA and protein using the same genetic code, all Evans and his team need to do is tweak the precise DNA sequence, letter by letter, to make it work as efficiently in plants as it does in other organisms. It’s harder than it sounds, of course, but well within the realm of the possible.
Their fundraising campaign has already been so successful that they have expanded their goal to making a glowing rose! I’d buy that for a dollar. Visit their Kickstarter to learn more and to get your name on the list for a glowing plant. The Glowing Plant project is also on Tumblr, so go give them some love and follow for more news.
These green-thumbed bio-hackers are imagining a world without streetlights, where we read without a light on our nightstand but instead a glowing plant in our room. I’d like to see that happen.
We never sit here under the weight of all this air, the 5 x 10^18 kg of atmosphere that sits above everyone on Earth, and say “Gosh, that sure is heavy!”
You don’t realize just how powerful that 1 bar (~100 kPa) of pressure is until a train car is filled with steam, allowed to cool, and then implodes ohmygod did that just happen?
Wil Wheaton on why being a nerd is awesome
Mr. Crusher delivered a message to an audience member’s newborn girl on why it’s so great to be a nerd, and a little advice for future life. It’s a goosebump-inducing video, and you should watch the whole thing here, and maybe just paste it to your mirror or something.
I don’t know how you’d paste a video to your mirror, but you should.
My favorite parts:
“Being a nerd… it’s not about what you love, it’s about how you love it… The defining characteristic that ties us all together, is that we love things.
Find the things that you love and love them the most that you can.”
A message that jives well with my own (see title of blog). I applaud you, Mr. Wheaton.
“Naki’o, a mixed breed dog from Nebraska, has become the first dog fitted with four prosthetic limbs. This strange achievement was accomplished by US company Orthopets, which specializes in artificial pet limbs. Naki’o lost his limbs and part of his tail to frostbite when he was abandoned in a cellar as a puppy, but now, thanks to a successful operation, he can run and play freely like other dogs.”
“At least they left me a replacement; Sherlock’s never that considerate.”
- Superwholock: Sam and Dean swipe the Doctor’s psychic paper
I once read a theory that since the tardis is the one that is translating all of the doctors language from gallifreyan to english. That at this point he is going over some highly complex formulas on physics he’s learned as a time lord. But that it is so complex that the only words in english that could translate it is physics
^^ that’s my favorite theory for this scene.
Some Guild Wars 2 Undead minion treatments over the years
I can’t describe how much I love the artwork for this game.
